It is Time to Start Roasting Your Coffee!

Ch-ch-check it out. Home roasting coffee trends are on the rise, and I think it is time for you to jump on board. What you probably are aware of as a crazy coffee fan is that the generic canned coffee that you buy at your local grocer is way beyond stale. The point is that whole roasted beans will retain their freshness for about two weeks, and when you freshly grind them you have about two hours of premium quality. If you invest in a home roaster, you will be able to have your own “roast profile” ( which is a recipe to all you non-roasters out there), and customize your own coffee blend that tastes just like you. What more can you ask for? I think it is time…

The 411 on Cold Brewing Coffee

If you have not heard of this alternate method for brewing coffee then you are in luck since I am about to add some much needed variety to your coffee drinking habits. Cold brewed coffee actually does have a few health benefits, like having less caffeine and less acidity than regular coffee, so if you are subject to heartburn and insomnia then this may be right up your alley! First, you will need a pitcher and a fabric filter for siphoning and filtering your cold brewed coffee. You will also want to take 1 pound of freshly ground coffee and mix it with 9 cups of cold water so it can sit overnight for 12 hours. After that, filter your cold brewed coffee into the pitcher and let it sit in your fridge for two weeks so that it becomes a syrup. From there, you can use this concoction to make delicious summer coffee beverages unlike any you may have had before! Please note that the shelf life for your cold brewed coffee syrup is one week. Delightful!

The Right Way to Drink Your Coffee

No, I’m not going to tell you how to spruce up your coffee drinks so that they taste better- because I hope you are already drinking the best coffee brew out there for you! What I am going to share with you is a new study that has shown that the best way to utilize the caffeine in your coffee intake is to drink numerous small cups throughout the day instead of large quantities only in the morning. This may seem like something that you could be concerned with as far as affecting your sleep may go, but if you are not overdoing it on ridiculous amounts of caffeine, then splitting up your coffee drinks throughout the day will keep you on an even keel instead of having the classic caffeine crash that we all encounter by 11 in the morning. Start your day right!

Get More Out of Your Cup of Joe

Great news, coffee drinkers out there! There are actually a few little-known home remedies that are currently circulating for some great ways that you can recycle your used coffee grounds. This may sound a little too granola for you, but when you see the awesome uses for the old coffee grounds that you are throwing away every day, you will be a believer. First, you can sprinkle used coffee grounds into your garden to enrich your plant life. Second, if you are having an ant problem in your yard, you will be glad to know that putting coffee grounds in that area will keep the little suckers away. And lastly, if you are wanting to reduce the appearance of your cellulite, you can mix coffee grounds with olive oil and apply that to your problem areas for some help. Remember to cover those areas with Saran wrap while the grounds sit to reduce a mess! That’s all for today, but I’m happy to know that I can have a clear conscience by tapping into these eco-friendly uses for my old coffee grounds. Thanks, Joe!

Starbucks Fails in Australia!

What can you find in the Land Down Under? Nary a Starbucks for miles! Isn’t that odd, and a little delightful? So while you may be looking all glazed over in line for the Starbucks drive through, your Aussie friend on the other side of the world is concocting his or her own authentic espresso drink from the finest beans available. Don’t you feel jealous?

Your Espresso Machine is Worth the Investment!

Today, class, we will be doing a math lesson. If you are drinking a $3 latte every day, and so is your significant other, then we are looking at a $6 a day coffee habit, on the modest side. Multiply that for your whole year, and that is over two grand, which can buy you two or three very snazzy espresso machines. Hmm… are we letting coffee houses get the best of us? It may seem like a little chunk of change to buy your first pro espresso machine, but from there, you are set in the coffee savings plan. Not to mention all of the popularity you are gaining with your new latté art designs. Am I right? Class dismissed.

Coffee to Cure Your Eye Spasm

We have all had an annoying eye twitch at one time or another, but there is actually a rare condition called a blepharospasm where the sufferer is terminally plagued by an eye spasm. If you are in a similar situation, then you will be happy to note that Italian researchers have tentatively proven that caffeine can alleviate the symptoms so that people can see clearly again. It is recommended to drink around two cups per day, and I myself feel that any study showing more and more of the benefits of our beloved brew is to be hailed! Coffee has been shown over and over to promote health, so what is stopping you from enjoying daily the sweet black gold as we know it?

Coffee Drinks Add Inches!

And no, I am not talking about height, my friends! Coffee drinks, like overloaded frappuccinos, can have more calories than a Big Mac and a medium drink, and up to 20 teaspoons of sugar! Coffee itself has been hailed for weight loss efforts in that it will help to boost your metabolisms throughout the day, but you are going in the wrong direction if you are relying on frappuccinos to do the same! Doesn’t that just make you mad when you think of all of the times that you have had a light lunch with a frappuccino to cut back? You could have been having a burger instead! Bring coffee back to its delicious roots by going au natural (black), and your looser pants will be your reward!

Let’s Hear It For Open-Minded Coffee Drinkers!

The latest studies have shown that drinking coffee - say from a cool new espresso machine, makes you more open-minded and subject to persuasion. This is proven to be unrelated to the fact that coffee also pumps you full of dopamine to make you happy, but mostly related to the finding that it will vastly improve your concentration so that you are more likely to absorb and be open to a new argument. This drink has so much more to offer than I have ever imagined, and my advice to you is that if you are looking to warm some people up to your ideas, start your meeting with a cup of joe!

Coffee to Give You Health and Wellness

One of the great things that I have learned over the years is that coffee is not only delicious, but also nutritious! Why do you think that I am such a big fan? Coffee has been shown to protect from liver damage, boost your short term memory, and even pump you full of much needed antioxidants. Coffee is even proven to increase happiness in all java drinkers that sip in moderation! To me, it seems like a meal in a cup because I know that I can’t get the quality, taste, and value anywhere else, for my health and otherwise. Now that is food for thought…

Coffee for Your Car?

You may have heard in the news lately that there has been innovative research done on the oils in coffee grounds that can be used as an alternative fuel source for our cars. I am loving that idea because, as funny as it sounds, your exhaust from your car /will/ be smelling like java as you drive! What better way to live? Not only that, but you are looking forward to cheaper gas and a better change in the environment as well. I am just pleased that the world is seeing coffee as multipurposed and multifaceted since it already provides us so much enjoyment for our daily taste and pleasure.

A European Coffee Service

If you have ever visited a fine café anywhere in Europe, then you may have been surprised to see the lack of to-go cups along with the masses of people sitting and enjoying their coffees. Gasp! Americans are known for being on the move, so it would only seem fitting that we need to take our coffees with us too. I have to offer to you that if you are looking to really experience and savor your brew, then take a tip from the Europeans and have a few minutes of quality time with your daily coffee drink. Or an hour. Or two.

Tips on Creating Latte Art

If you have become a pro at brewing your own espresso drinks, then your next step is making the finest latte art around. The best tip that I can offer you is to steam the milk in a smooth way so there are no bubbles or foam peaks. You will then want your milk to reach about 160 degrees, at which point you can pour the milk straight into your espresso shot so that it fills the cup. When the milk begins to reach the top of the latte, you will want to move your wrist from side to side so that a leaf design is created. You can finish by pouring a small stream of milk right into the middle of the leaf, but delicately so your art is still intact. And there you have it- watch out, Picasso!

The New Trend of Home Brewed Coffee

Another great trend that is on the rise is that of brewing your coffee in your own home. It seems that due to these economic times, many people are turning to their own barista skills to save some money by creating their coffee and espresso drinks at home. I think it goes deeper than that in the way that coffee drinkers are finally recognizing the need for quality control in their own coffee and flavor value. That means home is the place to be! Your perfect cup of joe needs to be nurtured and cultivated to its premium taste, and who better to do it than you? My name is Chuggin McCoffee, and I approve of this message.

The Starbucks vs. McDonalds Debate

Unless you have recently had your head under a large rock, then you may notice that there is some hot competition between the Starbucks and McDonalds locations out there. McDonalds has begun offering espresso coffee drinks, and Starbucks has followed that up with adding more fast food breakfast sandwiches to its fare. The good part in all this is that you no longer have to go to two separate fast food places on the way to work, but as far as quality goes, I, in my biased opinion recommend you use your own espresso machine and barista skills to blow them all out of the water. Just sayin’.

Coffee Consumption to Protect Your Gray Matter

As if there are not enough reasons out there to drink coffee already, here is one more to add to the list. It has been proven in studies tested on rabbits who were given about one cup of joe per day that the caffeine in coffee improves the barrier between the blood supply and your brain so it is protecting you from Alzheimer's Disease and dementia! What more can you ask for? It has been shown that caffeine can neutralize the cholesterol in the bloodstream so it can't damage the barrier that shields you brain, thus keeping out any harmful chemicals doing their thang in your blood supply. Bonus! So not only are you enjoying the tasty nectar of the gods that we so lovingly call coffee, but you are keeping your mind sharp and preserved. That's food for thought!

The 411 on Your Coffee and Espresso Drinks

If you have spent many a trip to your local coffee house scratching your head about some of the menu items, then I want to take the time to tell you a few of the differences in the authentic espresso drinks you may be missing out on. First, let's take the Espresso Macchiato. This is just an espresso topped with foam, unlike some ways it may be advertised in modern coffee houses. And then we have the Espresso Con Panna, which is an espresso shot topped with whipped cream. Delish! In the coffee drink family, there are the basic lattes and cappuccinos, with the diff being that a cappuccino is a third espresso, milk, and foam- equal parts, and the latte is espresso topped with steamed milk and an optional dollop of foam. After that is the Cafe Breve, which is a latte substituting half and half for steamed milk- rich and delicious! And lastly, we have the Americano, which is espresso and equal parts hot water to dilute the richness of the espresso down to the caliber of American coffee. Hmm... I hope you caught all that, but feel free to use this new info to impress all the local baristas on you block with you new bag of tricks for ordering the most authentic espresso beverage!

Coffee Sabotage?

That title is just about a tragedy in itself, because who would dare to sabotage a beloved coffee drink? The answer is simple: the big name coffee houses with money to gain. Boo! We just talked about the short cappuccino that can be found off the menu at coffee chains, but the twist is that coffee chains are doing that on purpose so that you actually can't access cheaper but better products because it is less money in pocket for them. There have even been accusations of other large companies that have sabotaged their cheaper products in the past just to encourage their customers to buy the more expensive products- shameless! So the moral of the story is that, while you may have to work for it, you are better off buying the secret coffee drinks at coffee chains because you will not be sacrificing money or quality. Finally.

The Best Little Secret in Cappuccino Drinking

You may be used to drinking a large cappuccino topping at 20 oz. everyday on the way to work, but I have to tell you a secret that may burst your bubble on your XXL cappuccino habit, According to the World Barista Championship Regulations, that is not really a cappuccino at all. Gasp! But it's true: if you look all over continental coffee cafes, you will see that an authentic cappuccino rolls in at around 5-6 oz. because a quality microfoam cannot be served at larger quantities. Meaning- if you are drinking upwards of 16-20 oz. of "cappuccino", then it really just is hot milk on top of espresso. Ordering a short cappuccino at any local coffee house will give you around 8 oz. of accurate cappuccino service. Not only will you be saving calories and cash, but you will truly begin to notice the rich flavors and robust tastes that make coffee what it is all about. You're welcome.

Which Coffee Bean is Best?

If you are a daily coffee hound, you may have picked up that there are two main species of the coffee plant producing beans out there. Yes, sir, you are correct- they are Arabica and Robusta. Let me break this down for you real quick like, and tell you that the better bean of higher caliber is the Arabica bean because it is grown in more delicate climates and has more care in the harvest. It does have half the caffeine content of its Robusta brother, but it is what you will find hitting all the bold tones in your gourmet coffee roasts. Robusta is mainly a cheap mixer for commercial coffee to conserve costs, so one friend to another, I am telling you that Arabica beans cannot be beat. Don't say I didn't warn ya!

Tell Me More About My Daily Coffee!

I know that if you are anything like me then you must have a very intimate relationship with your daily coffee brew of choice. But how well acquainted are you really? There is a vast history behind your steaming cup of joe, and I am here to share some little know secrets with you. First, hold on to your chairs- decaf is only 97% caffeine free. The beans are steamed several time to dramatically reduce the caffeine content, but don't rely on it being 100%. Next, coffee beans when harvested are virtually flavor free! the roasting process is what add the taste and aroma, so that is what you have to thank for your fresh coffee flavor everyday. And last, instant coffee has been around as far back as 1901! It was invented by a Japanese American scientist, who I can only assume didn't want to wait for his tasty caffeinated beverage. And we all thank you...

I Love the Coffee Top Caddy!

Let's face it- we have all had the frustration of taking coffee orders for our peers or co-workers and coming back without the right creamer or sugar. I, for one, am sick of hearing everyone complain, and that is why I am so thankful to Josh Harris for designing the new Coffee Top Caddy. This to go coffee lid has pre-made ridges and grooves in the top of the lid so that you have simple areas designated to store your cream and sugar. That way, you can get the girl in cubicle one two equals and one creamer, and the guy in cubicle two four raw brown sugars with no cream. This is foolproof, I tell you! Thank you, Josh Harris, I'm loving it.

The Cheapest Ways I Like to Chuggin My Coffee

Let me tell you readers out there, coming from an avid and passionate coffee lover like myself, there are a few small changes that you can make to your coffee brewing to give you the best quality and flavor possible, while still on a budget. First- and this may seem like a no-brainer- but invest in a water filter or buy distilled water. All you have to do is take the taste of regular tap water out of your brew, and it is miles better! Who would've thunk it? The next inexpensive way to improve your coffee sippin' is to educate yourself on the difference between the two types of beans that make up the roasts out there: Arabica and Robusta. Plain and simple, Arabica will be the higher quality beans, and if you begin to read you labels carefully, you will find you can get the better beans for around the same price. All it takes is a little tweaking, and your flavor profile is already enhanced. Knowledge is power!

The Daily Grind: Coffee and Espresso Brewing Options

Let's take a moment to reflect on the best tasting cup of coffee that you have ever had. I bet it was hot, rich, and had deep notes of caramel and mahogany that resonated on your tongue. I'm sure it was a cup to remember. But another thing that you must remember is that when you are looking to create the best brew in your coffee making, you must focus on the four keys: the roast, the coffee maker, the skill of the brewer, and... the coffee grinder! So my point is, that the coffee grinder should NOT be neglected in your brewing because you will achieve the optimum flavor by simply grinding your coffee and espresso beans instead of buying them pre-ground. Another shocking fact to add to that is that when beans are whole, their freshness will last for up to two weeks, but when they are pre-ground, they can begin to grow stale within a few hours! There is no way that what you are purchasing in the store is living up to its standards. I hope these facts helped, and let me close by saying that freshly ground coffee and espresso is known as the fresh cut grass of the flavor world. It can't be beat.

Drink Your Coffee, Work Out Harder

One of the latest and greatest studies that I have heard out there recently I feel that I must share with you. Not only is coffee my obsession and passion, but I am now finding out that it promotes exercise and relieves muscle soreness and pain! This may seem too good to be true, but I assure you, it is not. There was a small study showing that when a group of men cycled after having a few cups of coffee beforehand, then their results of pain and soreness were dramatically reduced. The simple reason behind this is that the caffeine in coffee blocks some of the chemicals your body makes when it is inflamed from exercise and soreness, so therefore, you are getting the benefit of the workout, without the nasty "workout hangover" afterward where you feel you can barely move from soreness and stiff muscles. I don't know about you, but this 100% makes me want to jump on an exercise bike and sip a latte. Seriously.

Learning to Use a French Press

From personal experience I can tell you it's always fun to try and learn new things. More specifically, it's fun to learn and try new things related to coffee! If you've never tried coffee from a french press before, now's the time. A good french press is very affordable ($20 - $80 depending on quality) and will make your coffee experience so much more enjoyable. If you've never done it before, take a look at our how to use a french press tutorial. Basically, you get your coffee beans. Grind them (coarse and 1 - 2 tablespoons per cup). Pour them into your french press pot. Pour really really hot water into the pot to cover the grounds. Cover it and let it steep for 4 minutes or so. Gently push down the filter and enjoy. Not hard at all! Give it a try, and you'll realize that with just a tiny bit more personal effort your coffee can taste a ton better than if you use a regular coffee machine.

Coffee Quiz

So I've made a quiz for anyone out there who's a little confused as to all the types of roasts of coffee out there. You may be asking yourself, "What's the right roast for me?" or "What the heck is a roast?" Basically, all coffees come in one of five different categories of roast type, ranging from very light (cinnamon roast) to very dark (Spanish Roast). A coffee bean's roast color is determined from, well, how it was roasted. The longer you cook something, the darker it's going to get, in layman's terms. And with coffee, this is an absolute art, because the flavor dynamic and profile of a coffee bean dramatically changes based on its roast. But this coffee quiz, aka our Java Questionnaire, takes it a step further. We ask you questions about your personality - and based on your answers, we tell you the kind of roast that best describes you. Don't let this confuse you - I'm not telling you to drink only one type of roast out there. By all means, have them all. But if you were coffee, this quiz tells you which coffee you'd be. So, have some fun, and try it out!
