The Long List of Coffee Health Benefits

Coffee has recently been proven to have a number of health benefits, and that list seems to be getting longer...

Cancer: Coffee has not been proven to cause cancer, and it even reduces the risk of mouth, throat, and colon cancer.
Heart Disease: Coffee does not raise the risk for heart disease, and it even offers preventative protection.
Diabetes: Coffee lowers the risk of developing type II diabetes.
Alzheimer's: Coffee strengthens the blood-brain barrier, which often becomes damaged and leads to Alzheimer's.
Osteoporosis: Excessive caffeine intake can lower bone density, which should not have an effect in moderate coffee drinking. Adding milk to your coffee on a regular basis can offer you the calcium you need to reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
Depression: Coffee can elevate energy levels and reduce depression.

What Are the Advantages of a Burr Coffee Grinder?

The two basic types of coffee grinders are blade or burr. So how do you know which one is right for you? Often times, burr coffee grinders are much more expensive since they are a commercial quality, but they will give you a more thorough coffee grind.

Burr coffee grinders work with either flat or conical burrs, which grind at low RPMs to carefully crush the coffee beans with less heat. The reason that this is so important is because it will prevent heat from burning the fresh coffee grounds and causing a bitter taste in the brew. A burr coffee grinder is a commercial style, which means that it can be used over and over on a daily basis without having to worry about the machine overheating or becoming damaged.

If you are interested in a professional style for your daily coffee grinding, burr coffee grinders are the durable alternative!

How to Evaluate Your Coffee

Coffee has several characteristics that you can evaluate, giving you guidelines to sip your Java as an expert coffee connoisseur:

Aroma: This is similar to the way that you would smell a fine wine. Some of the most aromatic coffees are Colombian and Kona.
Body: This is the heavy texture or thickness of the coffee on your tongue. Many Indonesian coffees have a full body.
Acidity: This is the tangy texture you feel on your tongue, which should not be confused with bitterness from a bad brew. Most African coffees have a high acidity.
Flavor: This is your opportunity to determine the flavor notes of your Java. Does it taste earthy or grassy? Does it taste nutty or flowery? The choice is up to you, and there is no wrong answer in coffee sampling!

Coffee Grind Consistencies for Your Brew

There are so many different ways to brew coffee, but it really does matter what type of grind consistency that you use. If your coffee grind is too coarse or too fine, it could cause over or under extraction, resulting in a bitter or watery taste.

Very fine grind: Turkish Coffee
Fine grind: Espresso
Medium grind: Drip Brew Coffee
Coarse grind: French Press
Very coarse grind: Percolator

With these simple guidelines, you can set yourself up for success in premium coffee brewing, no matter what method you choose. As a rule of thumb, it's always best to use one rounded teaspoon of fresh coffee grounds for every 6 ounces of water. You can tweak this ratio for an even stronger brew to your preference!

How to Choose the Best Tasting Coffee Beans

There are few things to take into consideration when choosing the best flavored coffee beans. First of all, what kind of roast do you like? Roasting coffee beans releases the essential oils, and how long they are roasted directly impacts their overall flavor. If coffee beans are roasted for a shorter period of time, they will have a light flavor. If coffee beans are roasted for longer, they will have a dark and smoky taste.

The next thing to take into consideration is where the coffee has been grown. Coffee trees develop their own characteristics in the region they are grown in, based on the soil quality, rainfall, and even growing processes. You can take the time to sample coffee beans from regions around the world to see which you like the best!

Finally, when you get your coffee beans home, make sure that you store them in an opaque, airtight container to prevent oxidation and preserve their freshness. Mmm...

Find Out More About Coffee Beans

Coffee beans are so delicious when they are freshly roasted to create a cup of Joe, but how much do you know about their preparation process?

Coffee beans are not actually beans, but they are seeds grown within cherries from a coffee tree. Normally, you will find two coffee beans with a cherry, and if only one coffee bean grows with the cherry, it is called peaberry coffee. This is the type of coffee that is in demand and seen as gourmet.

The caffeine content of coffee is found in the endosperm of the seed, and it ranges from .8% to 2.5% in the caffeine content. The level of caffeine within the coffee beans provides different characteristics of flavor, which also directly depends upon the region that they are cultivated in.

The bottom line is that coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world next to oil, and it is obvious why!

Can Coffee Reduce the Risk for Stroke?

A recent study has shown that regular coffee drinking provides great benefits in reducing the risk for stroke in women who are non-smokers.

This study showed the difference between women who smoked and were non-smokers in that the non-smoking women who drank four or more cups of coffee on a daily basis had a 43% less risk of stroke. For the women who were smokers, drinking the same amount of coffee only offered them a 3% reduction in their risk for stroke.

This study was done over 24 years on more than 80,000 women, who were all considered to be in good health. These same benefits may not be seen for women who have a number of other health issues, including high cholesterol, diabetes, or high blood pressure.

If you are hoping to see greater health benefits on a daily basis, consider coffee to be your ally in reducing stroke - if you're not smoking, that is...

Recent Coffee Findings: Coffee Reduces the Risk of Heart Rhythm Irregularities

A recent study conducted showed even more benefits from regular coffee drinking in that participants in the study that consumed four or more cups of coffee on a daily basis showed an 18% less risk of being hospitalized for heart irregularities.

Those that drank less coffee on a daily basis at 1 to 3 cups showed a 7% reduction, while those that abstained from coffee completely showed no benefits in a reduced risk for heart rhythm irregularities.

Many people may be surprised at the findings of this study since coffee drinkers often report feeling heart palpitations, however, regular coffee drinking should not be avoided if you have heart rhythm irregularities. This study did not reveal the relationship between coffee drinking and heart rhythm irregularities, but it did underscore the fact that if you are at risk for heart rhythm irregularities, there is no reason to abstain from coffee because it can actually provide benefits when consumed daily.

How Are Coffee Beans Processed?

It takes some serious effort to create your delicious cup of Joe every day, which doesn't need to be taken for granted. When it comes to coffee processing, there are two basic methods.

Dry Processing:
This occurs when the coffee beans are picked and removed from the coffee cherries. They will be completely dried in the sun or a forced air chamber. This is normally seen as a lesser quality method because it can cause damage to the beans in the process.

Wet Processing: Wet processing is often preferred because it protects the coffee beans while removing the coffee cherry. This process uses fermentation similar to making alcohol, which will eat away the outer layer of the coffee beans so that they can be washed clean with water.

It really makes you appreciate your Java, doesn't it?

Coffee History and Trivia

Coffee was rumored to have been discovered by an Ethiopian goatherder in 300 A.D., but where did it go from there?

To shed some light on your daily cup of Joe, one of the most interesting coffee historical instances happened in the 1700s. Coffee at that time was consumed in small bowls, which is why handles were soon developed for these bowls in Europe. This gave the opportunity to hold the handle of your coffee cup as you leisurely consumed your cup of Joe.

From that point, coffee history had many different milestones, including the invention of the first espresso machine in France in 1822, and the invention of instant coffee in Chicago by a chemist in 1901. Shortly thereafter, decaf coffee was developed by a German coffee importer, and he named it Sanka Coffee.

Easy French Press Tips

If you are a coffee lover out there, you have probably already discovered the joys of using a French Press. This is the preferred coffee method to offer fuller flavor in your cup of Joe because it leaves the essential oils in the brew. Try for yourself and see!

Here are some quick French Press brewing tips to get you started:

Don't ever brew with boiling hot water, which can scald the coffee grounds and cause them to taste burnt.
• Always make sure to freshly grind your coffee grounds to a coarse grind. This will help your cup of Joe to taste better, and it will also prevent sediment in your coffee cup from grounds that are too fine.
• Make sure to let your French Press steep for four minutes, which will give you the fullest flavors possible in your brew.
