Can Coffee Reduce the Risk for Stroke?

A recent study has shown that regular coffee drinking provides great benefits in reducing the risk for stroke in women who are non-smokers.

This study showed the difference between women who smoked and were non-smokers in that the non-smoking women who drank four or more cups of coffee on a daily basis had a 43% less risk of stroke. For the women who were smokers, drinking the same amount of coffee only offered them a 3% reduction in their risk for stroke.

This study was done over 24 years on more than 80,000 women, who were all considered to be in good health. These same benefits may not be seen for women who have a number of other health issues, including high cholesterol, diabetes, or high blood pressure.

If you are hoping to see greater health benefits on a daily basis, consider coffee to be your ally in reducing stroke - if you're not smoking, that is...

New Coffee Health Studies

Coffee is full of a number of health benefits, but the most recent study was published in the Hepatology Journal in January of 2010. The results from this study regarding coffee showed that the participants that increased their caffeine consumption had reduced signs of hepatic fibrosis. The participants within the study drank around 2 cups of coffee per day, and their symptoms were severely lessened.

In a related study done in 2007, it showed that regularly drinking coffee lowered levels of uric acid in the body, which often causes osteoarthritis and gout.

Last of all, keep in mind that habitually drinking coffee reduces the risk of diabetes. For every additional cup of coffee that you drink, your risk of diabetes is reduced by 7% because it works to regulate the metabolism and blood sugar within the body. I'll drink to that!

Is Caffeine in Coffee Good For Women?

Many women out there may be concerned about their caffeine intake, especially when it comes to how much coffee they drink on a regular basis. If that sounds like you, then the great news for you to know is that new studies have shown that drinking coffee regularly actually benefits your health!

In a recent study done on over 4,000 aging women in France and Portugal, it showed that regular caffeine consumption in coffee improved their mental alertness and prevented dementia. These benefits increased over time, meaning that the women that were 65 years old showed 30% less dementia, and the women who were 80 years old showed 70% less dementia with regular caffeinated coffee drinking.

Drink your caffeinated coffee in moderation at 2 to 3 cups per day to benefit your health!

Coffee Prevents Advanced Prostate Cancer

In a 20 year study done on 50,000 men, those that were regular coffee drinkers showed to be 60% less likely to be diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer that is difficult to treat. The main reason for this is many of the healthy components within coffee besides caffeine.

Coffee can directly affect the metabolism of glucose in the body, insulin levels, and sex hormone levels, which all contribute to the diagnosis of prostate cancer. Researchers have not yet pinpointed the exact component in coffee that provides these health benefits to men, but it in no way harms the health or increases the risk for prostate cancer.

This does not mean that men should begin heavily drinking coffee on a daily basis, but it is advised for both men and women to drink a moderate amount of coffee, 2 or 3 cups, daily for maximum health benefits.

How Do the Antioxidants in Coffee Measure Up?

You may have heard by now that coffee is full of antioxidants, which provide the benefit of neutralizing free radical damage in the body. Simply put, this has the potential to stop disease and illness, and also prevent wrinkles and premature aging.

To break it down for you, the average American drinks 1.64 cups of coffee per day. This simple coffee consumption offers 1299 mg of antioxidants daily, which is compared to the same amount offered by tea at only 294 mg. It is recommended to eat a diet rich in antioxidants, which includes whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Still, bananas only provide 76 mg of antioxidants, dried beans at 72 mg, and corn at 48 mg. That is a significant difference when you compare it to the generous health payoff offered by your daily cup of Joe!

The numbers don't lie...

Does Coffee Contain Antioxidants?

To begin with, it is important to understand that antioxidants are highly beneficial to your health. Why is that, you may ask? Antioxidants neutralize outside free radical damage, which can often come from smoking, pollution, or sun exposure. These same antioxidants will prevent free radicals from damaging the cells in the body, which will stop premature aging and disease.

Many coffee drinkers wonder if freshly brewed coffee contains enough antioxidants to make a difference, and the answer is that it does! It seems that green coffee beans have a higher antioxidant content than roasted coffee beans, but brewed coffee still contains a high level of antioxidants. It is recommended to drink a moderate amount of coffee to procure the most benefits from these antioxidants, which boils down to 2 or 3 cups per day. One more reason to enjoy a delicious and healthy cup of Joe!

Coffee Does Not Cause Heart Failure!

In the past, there was a study done on coffee drinkers that showed that coffee consumption was potentially linked to heart failure. However, a recent study done on 37,000 men in Sweden showed no connection between coffee drinking and heart failure.

Within the study, only 784 men developed heart failure over a nine-year period, and it had nothing to do with their coffee intake. This study was not done on women, so the results could differ, but it does not seem likely. It has been proven that there is no association between coffee and heart failure, and coffee may have a neutral or even protective effect on the health of the heart.

The initial studies that were done that showed a negative report on coffee consumption were only done retrospectively, which means that heart attack sufferers were questioned about their coffee consumption. Because of this reason, they were inaccurate, and coffee has been proven not to cause heart failure!

How Does Coffee Affect Your Health?

Where do I even begin? Coffee has so many new developing health benefits that it is a shame not to drink it!

In a study done by the Harvard School of Public Health, coffee drinkers showed a reduced risk for gallbladder disease and gallstones. This was compared to those who drank decaffeinated coffee and did not see the same benefits. Coffee also does have the ability to reduce the risk for Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's. The studies were done on heavier coffee drinkers who consumed up to 3.5 cups per day, so this is wonderful news for Java junkies.

Coffee also has been proven to improve IQ and short-term recall. This means that if you want to function better at work on a daily basis and become an all-star employee or employer, then drink to your health with a cup of Joe!

Is Coffee or Tea Healthier?

In the past, there were many negative studies surrounding coffee drinking, but now the truth has been revealed. The studies conducted on coffee drinkers in the past were on coffee drinkers who were also smokers that got little exercise, which caused the negative results.

The truth is that drinking coffee on a regular basis provides a great number of health benefits, enough to even rival drinking green tea! Green tea became a popular health drink when many people heard the coffee was bad for you, but now new studies have shown that coffee is full of antioxidants and has the ability to reduce the risk for many diseases. Coffee can protect against Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, cirrhosis of the liver, and even cancer. Green tea is full of antioxidants, but so is coffee, and it has the ability to provide you with antioxidant protection to prevent premature aging and disease in your body.

The bottom line is that the choice is up to you whether you prefer coffee or tea, but if you are a coffee lover, then you will be happy to know that it is the number one health drink you can sip on!

Coffee Has Serious Health Benefits!

Over the years, coffee has had a bad reputation from some poor studies done on the effects of drinking Java regularly. That is no longer the case!

There was a Harvard study done on 126,000 people over 18 years that did show that drinking up to 3 cups of coffee per day significantly reduced the risk of diabetes. Interestingly enough, the more coffee that was consumed within the study, the more the risk of diabetes was reduced. When the participants drank six or more cups of coffee each day, that did reduce their risk of diabetes at up to 54% for men and 30% for women.

Of course, all of this does need to be taken into account with a healthy lifestyle and diet, but it is wonderful to know that regular coffee drinking can be a part of disease prevention and overall wellness benefits, including reduced risk for diabetes!

Coffee Can Slow Down Liver Damage

This is something important for you to know as a coffee drinker, especially if you are suffering from the virus hepatitis C. Hepatitis C is a condition of the liver that often does not have any symptoms and is not detected until it is diagnosed. It develops from blood contact, and it can be treated with medication. Additionally, it also can have reduced development by being a regular coffee drinker.

Within a recent study, participants drank three or more cups of coffee per day, and they did show a slow in fibrotic damage to their livers resulting from hepatitis C. The study proved that regular coffee drinking can protect the liver to prevent liver cancer and cirrhosis from developing. The study also did not specify whether or not the coffee drinkers drank decaf or regular, so caffeine has nothing to do with the results seen in Java protecting the liver.

Whether or not you are suffering from hepatitis C, consider coffee to be a viable option to you to keep you in even greater health. I'll drink to that!

Is Locust Bean Coffee Good For You?

If you have not yet heard of locust bean coffee, then you may be interested to know that it is not something that comes from an insect. It is actually a bean that is cultivated in Turkey, where they produce 10% of the world's supply.

This bean is often ground into flour, and it is used for baking items. It does have a taste like cocoa, which is why it is now being produced in the instant coffee form. This bean is caffeine free, and it also does offer several health benefits, like lowering cholesterol and promoting bone growth. Many people use it as an aphrodisiac, and it also is a nice alternative for a gluten-free diet because it does not contain any gluten.

Though this locust bean does produce a coffee that offers health benefits, coffee itself has a long list of wellness payoffs that are not to be overlooked. Consider a delicious cup of Joe if you want to reduce your risk of stroke, colon cancer, cirrhosis of the liver, Parkinson's, or Alzheimer's disease. It's so worth it!

Coffee Myths Revealed!

You may think that you know so much about coffee, but let's check your trivia knowledge to make sure that you are on the right track!

First of all, should you give a cup of coffee to someone who is drunk to sober them up? No! This will only make them an alert drunk, and the coffee will also dehydrate them further so that their hangover is worse the next day. This is something you definitely want to avoid!

Does coffee help your problem solving skills? Yes! This is something that you want to keep in mind when you are starting your work or school day because coffee has been proven to increase reaction time, help with problem solving, and enhance muscle coordination.

Does coffee affect sleep? Maybe. If you are downing a cup of Joe directly before you go to bed, then you probably will have problems sleeping. However, if you are drinking it in the daytime, then it should pose no issue to you. If you're sensitive to caffeine, you may want to avoid coffee several hours before bed, and that does include decaf because decaf coffee still has trace amounts of caffeine in it.

Now you really know what is true and false about your cup of Joe!

How Does Coffee Protect Your Health?

This is a fantastic question that every coffee drinker needs to have answered because it is so wonderful to discover that your morning beverage is doing more than just waking you up to start the day! The list is as follows:

  • Coffee directly lowers the risk for liver cancer, and it slightly lessens the risk of colon cancer.
  • Coffee also has the capability to reduce the risk of type II diabetes, whether you are drinking decaf or regular. Your risk can be reduced by up to 50% because coffee contains chlorogenic acid, and this ingredient slows the intake of glucose into the intestines. This is especially important for anyone at risk of diabetes.
  • Coffee is going to protect your heart and slightly reduce the risk of stroke by up to 19% when you are drinking 2 to 3 cups per day.
  • Coffee also does shield the liver from cirrhosis damage, especially when it is triggered from alcoholism.
  • Coffee does prevent the onset of Parkinson's disease because of the caffeine content. It dramatically lowers the risk in men, and also in women who aren't taking post-menopausal hormone supplements.

Isn't this wonderful? The list of coffee and health benefits is getting longer and longer, making it even more enticing to drink to your health!

Does Drinking Coffee Lead To Healthy Teeth?

This is a very interesting development from the coffee study camp, but it has been found that coffee has antibacterial and anti-adhesive benefits. This is exactly what you need to keep your teeth protected and healthy, as well as to prevent cavities!

The studies show that both regular and decaf coffee have anti-adhesive benefits, which are also derived from the compound that gives coffee it's delightful flavor and aroma. These work to protect the surface of your teeth so that bacteria does not adhere to them, which also safeguards you from tooth decay. Since coffee is also antibacterial, it will keep any extra bacteria from forming and further harming your teeth. Yes, coffee may have gotten a bad rap because of the so-called "coffee breath", but it turns out that bacteria is the culprit behind that as well.

The Best Way To Drink Your Coffee

Did you think you were already fully enjoying your cup of Joe? Well, I have a few suggestions for you to help you out so that you can make even more out of your daily brew. First, split up your coffee drinking throughout the day so that you don't experience a caffeine crash, and you can keep your engine charged all day long.

Second, it is best to immediately drink your coffee after it is brewed, preferably without stirring it to disturb the brewing method, which means that you are better off enjoying it black. Also, make sure to cleanse your palate before drinking your coffee to have a pure and untainted flavor. It is also wonderful to add sweet liqueurs to your coffee, like Bailey's or Amaretto, for a premium taste.

Lastly, keep in mind that there is more than there appears to be in your cup of Joe, including iron, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, and Vitamin B. Enjoy your Java, and drink to your health!

Is Caffeine Good For You?

Another great coffee related question. We all know that coffee has a high amount of caffeine in it, so if you are concerned about how caffeine may be affecting your health, then I am here to tell you the 411. Firstly, caffeine is great for people suffering from asthma or migraine headaches. Caffeine is a bronchodilator so it will alleviate symptoms of wheezing or chest tightening, and it also works to stop the effects of migraines. On the flipside, you may experience a caffeine withdrawal headache if you cut it out of your life cold turkey, so be sure to enjoy your coffee in moderation. It is also possible to overdo it with your caffeine consumption, causing you calcium depletion, anxiety issues, or high blood pressure. The answer to the question is moderation, moderation, moderation! If you curb your Java consumption to up to 4 cups a day, then you will be on the road to great health because coffee and caffeine have numerous wellness benefits to offer you. Hurrah!

Coffee Helps You Live Longer!

Isn't this wonderful news? I always knew that there was something special about my rich and dark cup of Joe, but now that it has been proven that it is bursting with health benefits, I am feeling even more smug. Remember the days when coffee had a bad rap due to some inconclusive studies that smeared its name in the mud? Those days are now completely gone, and coffee is in the spotlight for lengthening your life. Not only that, but it also reduces asthma attacks by having the benefit of being a bronchodilator, which stops wheezing and coughing. As if that news wasn't good enough, you can also know that coffee prevents disease by being a main source of antioxidants when sipped daily in a moderate amount of up to 4 cups. I really did not need a reason to justify my coffee addiction before, but it is good to know that I am actually doing something for my taste buds and my health when I am sipping my cup of Joe every morning!

Coffee is Better Than Red Wine!

Seriously, it is just about time that coffee starts taking the spotlight that it so deserves. Red wine has been hailed for years by health experts as the drink to boost your health, but coffee was actually just given a bad reputation by some inconclusive results in several studies where the coffee drinkers were also smokers, contributing to poor health. Terrible. The truth of the matter is that if you are even a moderate coffee drinker at 2 cups per day, you are 25% less likely to have colon cancer, 50% less likely to have gallstones, and 80% less likely to have cirrhosis of the liver. Wow, wow, and wow. Why has no one been celebrating coffee in this manner before? Also, because of the caffeine content in coffee, which is roughly 3 times more than soda or tea, coffee is known to prevent the development of Parkinson's disease. What are you waiting for? Brew yourself a cup of Joe right now!
