Can Babies Have Coffee?

If this is a burning question on your mind, the short answer is that it is not recommended for babies to have coffee. The main reason behind this is not that it will not stunt their growth, which is an old wives tale, but that it will disrupt their sleep patterns.

When coffee drinking was tested on baby rats, they showed fragmented sleep patterns and a faster breathing rate, resulting in less sleep. As a pregnant or breast-feeding mother, there is nothing wrong with drinking coffee in moderation at up to 3 cups per day, but it should not be directly given to the infant or drank in excess.

Coffee provides a number of disease fighting benefits, so it is recommended to be enjoyed regularly in moderation, but children should wait to enjoy it until they are older!

Drink Decaf Coffee While Pregnant!

There have been many schools of thought surrounding whether or not it is a good idea to drink coffee during pregnancy, and from all of the studies I have seen, the results showed that one moderate cup per day is perfectly fine, but it is recommended to switch to decaf. After you have your baby, it is okay to increase your coffee intake to up to 3 cups, but just keep in mind that amount equals 300 mg of caffeine. Therefore, it is more advisable to use milligrams to measure your caffeine intake since coffee drinks can come in all shapes and sizes. One study actually did show that excessive coffee intake did increase women's risk of miscarriage during pregnancy, but the good news is that there are so many delicious varieties of decaf coffee available that you really don't have to miss out while you are protecting the health of your baby!
