How to Evaluate Your Coffee

Coffee has several characteristics that you can evaluate, giving you guidelines to sip your Java as an expert coffee connoisseur:

Aroma: This is similar to the way that you would smell a fine wine. Some of the most aromatic coffees are Colombian and Kona.
Body: This is the heavy texture or thickness of the coffee on your tongue. Many Indonesian coffees have a full body.
Acidity: This is the tangy texture you feel on your tongue, which should not be confused with bitterness from a bad brew. Most African coffees have a high acidity.
Flavor: This is your opportunity to determine the flavor notes of your Java. Does it taste earthy or grassy? Does it taste nutty or flowery? The choice is up to you, and there is no wrong answer in coffee sampling!

How To Host a Coffee Cupping

This is a fantastically fun event that will have your coffee addict friends beating down your door in droves! It is best to have a coffee cupping with a group of friends because it is similar to a wine tasting where you get to talk with your peers and compare notes on the coffee flavors. You will want to serve each person in your party 6 ounce cups of each type of coffee, a glass of water, a notepad, and a sampling spoon. With all of these components, they will be able to sample different coffees with the spoon, cleanse their palates, and take notes.

It is best to select your coffees from different parts of the world, with a minimum of three choices, but as you get more advanced, you may want to select numerous types from one growing region to see who can discern the differences. Brew all of the coffees with the exact same style so that their taste consistencies will be the same, and keep in mind that true cupping happens with freshly ground coffee that is not brewed. Shocker! This means that you will be tasting fresh coffee grounds, which may be something to get used to, but as you begin to appreciate the bold complexities of Java, it will grow on you. Cup away!
