Find Out More About Coffee Beans

Coffee beans are so delicious when they are freshly roasted to create a cup of Joe, but how much do you know about their preparation process?

Coffee beans are not actually beans, but they are seeds grown within cherries from a coffee tree. Normally, you will find two coffee beans with a cherry, and if only one coffee bean grows with the cherry, it is called peaberry coffee. This is the type of coffee that is in demand and seen as gourmet.

The caffeine content of coffee is found in the endosperm of the seed, and it ranges from .8% to 2.5% in the caffeine content. The level of caffeine within the coffee beans provides different characteristics of flavor, which also directly depends upon the region that they are cultivated in.

The bottom line is that coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world next to oil, and it is obvious why!

How Are Coffee Beans Processed?

It takes some serious effort to create your delicious cup of Joe every day, which doesn't need to be taken for granted. When it comes to coffee processing, there are two basic methods.

Dry Processing:
This occurs when the coffee beans are picked and removed from the coffee cherries. They will be completely dried in the sun or a forced air chamber. This is normally seen as a lesser quality method because it can cause damage to the beans in the process.

Wet Processing: Wet processing is often preferred because it protects the coffee beans while removing the coffee cherry. This process uses fermentation similar to making alcohol, which will eat away the outer layer of the coffee beans so that they can be washed clean with water.

Facts About Coffee Growing

How much do you know about your coffee before it makes it to your cup of Joe? Here are some facts about coffee harvests:

Coffee is best grown at higher altitudes over 3,000 feet. This environment provides more oxygen in the air and cloud covers so that the beans can grow more slowly to develop mature flavors.
• Robusta coffee is commonly grown at lower altitudes, and it is seen to be more resistant to disease and weather conditions. However, it is still seen as the lesser quality coffee choice compared to Arabica coffee.
• Coffee trees need a significant amount of rainfall at 1500 to 2000 mm per year.
• Coffee trees grow best in well aerated soil because their root systems require oxygen to thrive.
• Coffee is only grown along the equator because it requires a temperate climate to produce a premium crop.

How To Home Grow Coffee

If you have a little bit of time on your hands, say five years, then you can grow your own coffee tree! Coffee trees take about three years to produce flowers, and they may take up to five years before they can produce their first crop.

You can start out with the seed of your coffee tree in a pot with fast draining soil. It is important to keep the soil moist at all times, but not too soggy. These budding coffee plants work well in filtered sunlight, and it will take 6 to 8 weeks before the first shoot starts to appear through the soil. After a few months when the leaves begin to grow, you can replant your coffee tree in your yard under a large shade tree. This is the best option because it will allow you to shade grow your coffee. Shade grown coffee is beneficial because the larger shade tree will provide a protective covering to the coffee tree so that it can grow slowly and develop flavors more deeply.

After five years, you will be able to harvest your first coffee crop and roast it yourself at home. A custom cup of Joe made and grown by yours truly!
