Can You Drink Coffee If You Have a Sensitive Stomach?

This is a very common question, but you can actually still enjoy your brew if you have stomach sensitivities. Many people with sensitive stomachs steer away from coffee because of the high acid content, which can often cause irritation. However, here are a few tips to remedy that so that you can still enjoy your delicious cup of Joe!

  • First of all, try coffee from Africa or Indonesia because those regions often produce coffee with less acidity.
  • Next, drink a darker roast. If a roast is darker, it will have less acidity than a lighter roast.
  • Last of all, consider cold brewing your coffee. This is a process that takes several hours because it does have to brew overnight, but it will remove almost 60% of the acidity within the coffee itself.

The good news is that you don't have to give up coffee if you have a sensitive stomach!

All You Need To Know About Gourmet Coffee Roasting

Gourmet coffee is truly a delicious treat, but it is still important to find out some fun facts about the way in which it is roasted so that you can choose the best quality beans for your cup of Joe.

The longer that your gourmet coffee beans are roasted, the darker they will become and the more that they will shrink. Dark roasted coffee beans shrink more than light roasted coffee beans, so it does take more dark roasted coffee beans to create a full pound than if they were a light roast. Normal coffee roasting will shrink the beans by 20%, but dark roasted beans can shrink by up to 25%. Coffee beans that are lightly roasted can shrink by 11%.

Something to keep in mind is that a lot of commercial gourmet coffee that is produced is under roasted to cut costs. You will be able to tell if your coffee is under roasted because it will have a green or astringent flavor, meaning that it is not up to par. Be sure to research the roaster you buy from well to make sure that they will offer you the freshest and most flavorful quality possible in your gourmet coffee beans!

Do Light Roasts Have Less Caffeine Than Dark Roasts?

Many people are fooled by the common coffee myth that dark roasts have more caffeine than light roasts because they have a fuller and more robust flavor. However, quite the opposite is true!

A dark roast is roasted for a longer period of time, which means that it ends up burning off some of its weight in caffeine during the lengthy roasting process. This means that pound for pound, a light roast will have more caffeine than a dark roast. Furthermore, keep in mind that Robusta beans actually have twice the caffeine as Arabica beans, though they are not the preferred coffee bean type because they are seen as cheaper fillers with a lower quality taste.

When you're considering a cup of Joe, a regular cup of coffee will have more caffeine than a shot of espresso because of the extraction time. An espresso is extracted for ideally around 25 seconds, and a cup of coffee can take up to four minutes to extract. This means that the fresh coffee grounds are in contact with the hot water for longer, leaving more caffeine in the final cup of Joe.

For a quick fix with the most caffeine, try a light roast to wake you up!

How To Find a Tasty Dark Roast Coffee

If you have not yet delved into the rich and aromatic world of dark roasted coffee, then I invite you to come aboard! Dark roasted coffee is actually when the roasting process is taken past the second crack and more oils are pulled from the beans, almost to the point of burning. It takes an extremely skilled roaster to bring out a smoky and flavorful profile from dark roasted beans without having a charcoal aftertaste. Look for blends like French, Italian Espresso, Spanish, and Viennese for dark roasts that will suit you, and if you are not sure where your tastes lie, then I have the perfect customized Java Questionnaire for you! With a dark roast you will find that it is complex and full bodied, yet may often have sweet undertones. If you feel that a dark roast is too heavy for your palette, then there are actually several varieties of blends that mixed medium and dark roasts for a lighter taste in the dark roast range. Now all that is left to do is sample the many high quality dark Javas to see what works best for you!
