Has American Coffee Gone South?

A recent consumer report rated 37 different American coffee blends available on the market, only to find that none of them were able to score as high as "Excellent" or "Very Good". What gives?

Interestingly enough, one of the highest scoring American coffee blends was the Starbucks House Blend at a mediocre rating of "Good". An American coffee blend constitutes a combination of coffee beans from at least two different growing regions all over the world. The problem is that many American roasters have started using cheaper Robusta beans within their blends to save costs, which often impacts the taste of the coffee blend for the worse.

If you hope to preserve the integrity of your cup of Joe, then make sure to purchase whole beans, grind them fresh, and look for roasts that are made with 100% Arabica coffee beans to promote flavor.

How Fresh is Grocery Store Coffee?

Thousands of Americans purchase coffee in the grocery store, but you may want to think twice about your investment in your brew.

First of all, after coffee is roasted, it will sit in a warehouse for two weeks at a time. From that point, it will be loaded onto a truck and moved to different distribution centers where it can sit for up to a week. If the grocery store chain decides that they want the coffee product, then it will be moved to another distribution center until the store is ready for it. After it is finally shelved, it can sit on the shelf for months at a time until it is purchased!

More popular coffee products will be purchased more quickly, but lesser known brands can sit on the shelves of the grocery store for months at a time. The bottom line is that if you want the freshest Java possible, then you need to buy freshly roasted coffee beans that are whole. Look for a company (like mine!) that will ship the coffee beans to you the day that they are roasted for premium freshness in your brew!

Does Coffee Raise Cholesterol?

If you are someone concerned with your health, it is important to monitor the cholesterol levels in your body. High cholesterol has the potential to slow the blood flow to and from the heart, which could potentially cause difficulty breathing or a heart attack.

In the past, many people strayed away from coffee drinking because it was rumored to raise cholesterol levels. There also were some studies that did claim that drinking unfiltered coffee would also elevate cholesterol. There were other studies that showed that individuals who drank decaf coffee had higher LDL levels of cholesterol.

The bottom line is that the studies were inconclusive, and not just one factor contributes to high cholesterol. It is important to drink coffee in moderation at 2 to 3 cups per day and also have a healthy exercise and diet plan in place for success.

Coffee Is Much Healthier Than You Know!

As a coffee lover, you may be interested to know that coffee came in second as the healthiest beverage when reported by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition!

One of the main reasons for that is that coffee is full of antioxidants, which do neutralize free radical damage in the body. This will prevent disease and premature aging, and it can even prevent wrinkling if you use it in a topical skin care product! (Just a tip!) Otherwise, keep in mind that these benefits only apply to regular and not decaf coffee drinkers. Interestingly enough, in 2005, a study done on Coffee and Lipoprotein Metabolism found that those individuals who drank 3 to 6 cups of decaf coffee each day had raised levels of blood fat in their body associated with LDL cholesterol.

The bottom line is that caffeinated coffee can easily be enjoyed in moderation for amazing health benefits!

Can You Drink Coffee When You Are Pregnant?

If you are a mom-to-be who is also a coffee lover, then you may be asking yourself this same question. Studies have shown that it is definitely safe for pregnant women to enjoy coffee in moderation, meaning up to 3 cups per day.

There were past studies that showed rats to have serious side effects from in taking caffeine during their pregnancies, but you do need to keep in mind that humans metabolize caffeine much differently than rodents do. Also, the amount of coffee that the rats were given was equivalent to almost 70 cups a day for a human!

If you do want to be incredibly safe in your pregnancy, then you can still enjoy delicious decaf coffee. Decaf coffee has come a long way in flavor and taste, and it is recommended to look for coffee that is decaffeinated through the Swiss Water Process. This is a much more natural method of decaffeination that does not use chemicals to remove the caffeine from the coffee beans.

How Much Caffeine Does Coffee Have?

This is a very interesting question, and it is important for you to know if you are using coffee to get through your day. You may be interested to find out that drip brewed coffee has more caffeine than espresso because the coffee grounds stay in contact with the water for a longer period of time, making them more caffeinated.

An 8 ounce cup of drip brewed coffee will have anywhere from 60 to 120 mg of caffeine. A 2 ounce shot of double espresso will have 45 to 100 mg of caffeine. You can compare these amounts to a 12 ounce can of soda, which has around 35 mg of caffeine. As you can see, drip brewed coffee packs the best punch, which also does include other methods of coffee brewing, like the French Press.

It is best to drink your coffee spread out throughout the day in small amounts so that you will stay energized and not experience any caffeine crashes!

What is the Shelf Life of Your Coffee?

Fantastic question! The not so good news is that if you are still enjoying any type of pre-ground coffee from the grocery store then it is incredibly stale. You can double or triple that for pre-ground decaf purchased from the grocery store because it is a less popular choice, so it probably has been stocked up for a longer period of time. The best way to go is to buy whole and freshly roasted coffee beans, which you can find on my site, and they are freshly roasted the day that they ship to you. From there, they began to emit gases and release carbon dioxide within the first three days of roasting, and they are best enjoyed with a maximum freshness up to a week to 10 days after roasting. Once it gets to the two week mark, your beans will be completely stale and have lost the majority of their flavor. This is also why it is important to freshly grind all of your coffee beans because after being ground, the beans only have a few hours before they start to go stale. Make sure that you are also storing your freshly roasted beans in an airtight container so they have limited contact with oxygen, and you will be able to enjoy the fresh flavors and tastes for up to two weeks at a time! Delicious.

What Do You Think About Decaf?

I have to make a confession that I have spent years shunning decaf as the weaker coffee variety that is only for sissies (please excuse me), but I am finding out more and more about it that is supporting the evidence that decaf can be just as tasty as the original version. Say it ain't so! What you need to take into consideration is that there are several methods for decaffeinated coffee, some of which can actually be harmful and contain chemicals that are carcinogenic. The chemical method that is used in a process labeled "naturally decaffeinated" is by using a natural solvent called ethyl acetate that is found in fruits, vegetables, and also coffee itself. You can also completely soak the beans in a water process, but it will only leave them 95% caffeine free, though it is all-natural. The great news is that the Swiss Water Process is a patented caffeine removal technology through water that is completely natural, while removing 99.9% of the caffeine and preserving the delicious Java flavors.

More hopes in the future point to the caffeine free coffee plant being bred in Cameroon, but it only contains 70% less caffeine than the original. Regardless of your preference, the best way to choose decaf coffee is by selecting the same type of premium coffee beans that are freshly roasted, so that you don't risk buying old decaf that has been sitting on the shelf for months at a time, since it is often sold less. I recommend you try the Almond Toffee Flavored Coffee, which is available to in decaf, and we freshly roast the day it ships to you! What is your favorite decaf coffee?

There is a New Decaf Coffee Plant!

Can you believe what science is coming up with these days? This is wonderful news for all coffee lovers who consider themselves to be caffeine sensitive because even regular decaf coffee is only up to 98% caffeine free. There are actually two process is used to decaffeinated coffee, the Swiss Water Process and the Chemical Solvent Method. The former is obviously free from chemicals, but it can be more expensive, and is used for gourmet and organic blends. The latter uses chemicals to remove the caffeine and often uses cheaper beans like Robusta. If you are looking for a better taste to your decaffeinated coffee, then keep your eye out for what is going on with this new species of a decaf coffee plant because scientists feel that it is very easy to breed and create different varieties of coffee beans. This means more flavor and better taste with zero caffeine, which is something that has never been heard of before in the coffee community. Decaf coffee lovers rejoice!

Drink Decaf Coffee While Pregnant!

There have been many schools of thought surrounding whether or not it is a good idea to drink coffee during pregnancy, and from all of the studies I have seen, the results showed that one moderate cup per day is perfectly fine, but it is recommended to switch to decaf. After you have your baby, it is okay to increase your coffee intake to up to 3 cups, but just keep in mind that amount equals 300 mg of caffeine. Therefore, it is more advisable to use milligrams to measure your caffeine intake since coffee drinks can come in all shapes and sizes. One study actually did show that excessive coffee intake did increase women's risk of miscarriage during pregnancy, but the good news is that there are so many delicious varieties of decaf coffee available that you really don't have to miss out while you are protecting the health of your baby!
