Does Coffee Dehydrate You?

This is a very interesting question with a serious amount of misinformation circulating. A study was done in 2002 by Lawrence Armstrong to prove that regular caffeine consumption in coffee does not have any effect on dehydrating the body, even compared to regularly drinking water!

This is wonderful news for coffee drinkers because moderate coffee consumption will not work to severely dehydrate you or work as a diuretic. Even better, the more coffee that you regularly drink, the more tolerant you will be to its mild diuretic effects on the body.

Last of all, make sure that you are focusing on moderate coffee consumption because that is the key. Excessive caffeine can cause anxiety, insomnia, and jitteriness, but it does not negatively affect the body when consumed in moderation. That's great news for all coffee drinkers out there!

Coffee Helps Dehydration?

For years, health professionals have been looking down their nose at coffee, saying that it causes dehydration and fatigue. Turns out, those studies are not too accurate because you can actually count your daily cup of Joe in your fluid intake. The studies were done on people exercising in the heat, which is the source of many cases of dehydration, and those that had up to 400 mg of coffee were totally fine with the same hydration levels is a non-coffee drinker. This is great news, especially for those folks at high altitudes, because they can now have a cup of coffee prior to a workout without any adverse effects of dehydration. In fact, coffee has also been pointed to be helpful before a workout because it does increase performance and reduce the risk of muscle soreness, so now that it does contribute to daily fluid intake, the news is even better. I guess this means that it's A-OK to fill up your sports bottle with a cup of Joe when you're running, but I'm thinking that the hot coffee flavors won't be too appealing...
