What Are the Benefits of Sustainable Coffee?

According to recent studies, sustainable coffee makes up 2% of the coffee that is consumed worldwide, and it encompasses organic, fair trade, and eco-friendly coffee.

Organic coffee is grown without the use of pesticides for three or more years, making it a safer product. Fair trade coffee guarantees the coffee farmer a set wage so that they can focus on quality within their coffee production. Eco-friendly coffee depends upon the method, but it can often use the shade grown practice of coffee growing. This means that larger trees are grown above the coffee crops to offer a natural habitat and ecosystem for native birds to live in. This will also potentially work as a natural insect repellent.

Overall, sustainable coffee is an ideal choice that encompasses a number of eco-friendly coffee growing methods. Delicious, and good for the environment!

Protect Yourself With Organic Coffee

If you are a regular coffee drinker, it is definitely important to put some thought into your daily cup of Joe. One of the best ways to protect yourself and the environment is to look for coffee beans that are certified as USDA organic.

For coffee to become certified as USDA organic, it must be grown for three years without harmful pesticides. This is a guarantee that you will be protected, as well as the environment. This type of organic coffee is also grown with crop rotation to keep nutrients in the soil and prevent erosion.

The point of the matter is that the best way to find fresh organic coffee is to look to online retailers. Organic coffee is slightly more expensive than regular coffee, but the value it gives to you is priceless. Online retailers sell freshly roasted organic coffee that will be directly shipped to you to protect both yourself and the environment!

Shade Grown Coffee vs. Organic Coffee

Many people get confused and feel that shade grown and organic coffee are one and the same, but that is not always the truth. Shade grown coffee is the traditional method of coffee growing that provides coffee cultivation in a shaded environment, which enables the coffee trees to grow at a slower rate to produce a higher quality crop. This does take a time investment, but it will produce a more excellent bean as a result.

Oftentimes, shade grown coffee will not need the use of fertilizers or pesticides because of the birds that live in the trees above. These birds can be a natural insect repellent because they eat the insects off of the coffee trees, and their waste also becomes fertilizer. However, this is not mutually exclusive because shade grown coffee farmers can still use pesticides on their coffee plants. Organic coffee does not have any pesticides used in its cultivation. Many times shade grown coffee will be organic, but that is not always interchangeable.

Regardless, both of these practices do provide methods for a sustainable coffee environment, which protects both the coffee plant and the coffee farmer. These types of coffee products are also something that you can trust because they will most often not use pesticides or harmful chemical fertilizers, which is ideal for you to look for as a coffee drinker. And on top of that, both of these methods produce a better tasting coffee crop. I'll drink to that!

What's So Great About Shade Grown Coffee?

Interestingly enough, shade grown coffee is the traditional method of coffee harvesting, but many farmers have changed their practices to sun cultivation because they can produce a larger coffee crop much faster. However, this also means that they may cut down forests, use pesticides, and affect the soil and water supplies as a result. Shade grown coffee has many benefits in itself, which is exactly why it is important to look for this type of coffee production when choosing beans for your daily Java.

Shade grown coffee offers:

  • A natural habitat for wildlife.
  • Less use of pesticides for a safer coffee product.
  • Slow growing coffee crops that develop deeper and more delicious flavors.
  • Preservation of natural forests.
  • Natural pest prevention through the use of birds living in the trees that eat the insects on the coffee crops.

This is something important to consider when you are selecting your own premium coffee beans because shade grown coffee offers a trusted method that also protects the environment. The bottom line is that if you want your coffee to taste better in the morning, then it needs to be shade grown because these coffee beans are given extra time to develop so that their flavor profile is much more complex.

  • After you have brewed, make sure to be eco-friendly and reuse your coffee grounds for scrubbing stubborn stains on dishes, fertilizing the yard, and even exfoliating your face!
  • It's the summertime, so make sure to try out the cold brewing coffee option, which is so much better than watering down your hot coffee with ice cubes to try to cool it down.

What's So Great About a French Press?

Have you figured out the ins and outs of your coffee brewing yet? Then you must try the French Press! If you have any mysterious ideas about it being more difficult or tedious to use than a traditional coffee maker, then you, my friend, are dead wrong, and that is great news for you! A French press works by you placing coarsely ground fresh coffee beans in the bottom of the pot (and it is usually clear), and then you will add hot water. I advise you not to add boiling water since this could burn the beans. After that, you will place the lid on it, and you will let it steep for up to four minutes. From that point, you will plunge down the strainer directly so that you don't let any grounds escape, and you have a final coffee product that is delicious and decadent. And why is that? Well, for one thing, you have saved all of the essential oils that have not been removed through a paper filter so that your brew tastes amazing. Another thing, it is eco-friendly because you are not using paper filters that you throw away every day. And finally, for all of you type A coffee lovers, you can have total control of your brewing process by deciding the temperature of the water, the extraction time, and how long the grounds are saturated. Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic!

What Are the Benefits of Organic Coffee?

Coffee lovers, this is a fantastic question because the benefits of drinking Organic are many! What constitutes coffee to be certified by the USDA as Organic? First, the farmer must have refrained from using harmful pesticides and chemicals for three years, and he or she must also practice crop rotation to keep the soil from being stripped from nutrients or eroded. After this point, the US Department of Agriculture will certify the coffee as Organic. This means that you will be getting better flavors because pesticides have not stunted the growth of the bean, so it can be bigger and more fuller in its flavor profile. Also, you can drink to your own health because the lack of chemical used in the Organic coffee harvesting will keep your health from being damaged, and it will also protect the environment. So many reasons to drink Organic! Enjoy a guilt free cup of Joe.

Coffee Shops Give Discount To Ceramic Cups

This is a really interesting concept because more and more coffee shops all over the world are rewarding their patrons for being eco-friendly and green in their pursuit of coffee drinking. They are now giving price breaks to many of their customers who bring in their own ceramic cups so that they can save on throwing away excess trash for disposable paper cups. The only glitch in it is that some people are arguing that it takes so much more energy to make a ceramic coffee mug, so you have to use it over 1,000 times to equal out the energy that is used in making a paper cup. Lucky for me, I definitely use my ceramic coffee cup thousands of times, so I'm in the clear. I can wager to guess that most other coffee drinkers are the same way, due to their fanatic Java love. Other than that, consider looking for Fair Trade and Organic coffee beans that are harvested in eco-friendly ways without the use of pesticides, and also with fair wages for the coffee harvesters. This is a great way to drink a guilt free cup of Joe that is not only delicious but green as well!

The Benefit of Microroasting

In short, microroasting is small level coffee roasting done by specific coffee craftsmen that want to make select coffee products unlike any other. When you are purchasing a coffee microroast, you can know that it is not mass-produced, and that the beans are selected specifically from farmers with the freshest standards, which are often fair trade or organic. We have discussed these methods of coffee production in previous blog posts, but basically you are getting the best taste and quality by going fair trade or organic, as well as being eco-friendly. Win, win! In a past post, I also talked about roasting coffee at home, so if you are loving the flavors that micro-roasting has to offer, then this is a great way to get started yourself. Coffee is not just for drinking, but it is for crafting the finest flavors possible. Drink up!

Go Green with Your Java Choice

As you are learning more about the precious black gold that we call our beloved coffee, you may have heard certain phrases like fair trade, organic, and shade grown. Let me give you a rundown on all three of these coffee growing methods so that you can make an informed coffee decision that will benefit both yourself and the environment.

  • Fair trade: This type of coffee is actually regulated by agencies to protect the farmers and give them their wages so that they do not resort to unfair methods of harvesting your coffee and compromising the quality of the bean.
  • Organic: Short story long, this coffee is harvested without nasty pesticides to ensure your safety.
  • Shade grown: This type of coffee is harvested under large shade trees to protect the crop and also let the farmers grow two crops in one field- it also benefits the birds of the region. Win, win!

This is a super brief tutorial on eco-friendly types of coffee that are out there, but keep in mind when you are choosing one of these varieties, they are not only good for you, but they are good for Mother Earth. And doesn’t that feel good?
