What It Takes To Become a Barista

If you are interested in becoming a professional barista, or espresso expert, then there are a few credentials to keep in mind that you can add to your set of skills.

• Creation of non-milk espresso drinks
• Creation of milk-based espresso drinks
• Quality of milk frothing
• The ability to adjust the grind of your espresso beans
• Perfect tamping skills
• Roasting
• Blending
• Skills in latte art
• Unique drink creation

So where are you going to begin? It is quite easy to begin by focusing on your milk frothing skills because that will be the base of many of your drinks. It is important to start to practice on your home espresso machine by heating your milk up to 160°. When you are frothing, it is best to use whole milk because it will create a richer and fuller microfoam, which needs to be thick in consistency and free from bubbles.

Becoming a barista is a wonderful skill to have, and practice makes perfect!

Pro Barista Classes From UT Austin

This is a fun little treat, even for people who are out of college, because UT Austin is offering expert barista classes within their informal learning class schedule. These classes are hosted by the local coffee shop, Kick Butt Coffee, which is a popular coffee shop for Austin natives.

This coffee shop has a full bar, as well as an espresso bar, and they also have comedy shows and live music. This will give you the opportunity to learn how to pull a perfect espresso within 25 seconds on a large commercial quality espresso machine. If you have a home espresso machine that you do not yet know how to master, then this will be perfect for you because it will help you to get comfortable in brewing a latte, macchiato, cappuccino - you name it!

UT Austin offers many more fun informal education classes to allow you to get a large amount of learning done in a small amount of time. Some of the choices are Travel Ireland, Mommy Fitness, and Autumn Desserts. Personally, I'm thinking that becoming a professional barista is the best class that you could take because that is a skill you will cherish your whole life long!
