Easy Home Coffee Roasting Tips

If you are interested in roasting coffee at home, that is a wonderful hands-on idea! Here are some tips to get you started:

• Make sure that you are working in a well ventilated area to prevent any excessive smoke in your home. It is best to roast on your porch outdoors if you have the space.
• Stay organized with all of your supplies, and make sure that you have a colander to cool the beans when you're done roasting.
• It is best to have a thermometer on hand to insert into the roaster to determine if the beans are roasting consistently.
• Roasting can be as easy or complex as you would like, depending on what flavors you would like to create within the final roast.
• Make sure to always clean your roaster or hot air popcorn popper well because the essential oils from the coffee beans can easily build up and cause issues.

What Do You Know About Gourmet Coffee?

Gourmet coffee offers a delicious coffee roast to drink, but there are some interesting facts to know about the roasting process.

When all coffee is roasted, it will shrink or lose weight in the roasting process. This means that if you start out with 1 pound of green unroasted coffee beans, it will not yield 1 pound of roasted coffee after it has been roasted. A lighter roast of coffee will shrink less by around 11%, and a very dark roast of coffee can shrink up to 25%. This just goes to show that a darker coffee roast loses much more weight in the roasting process because it is roasted for a longer period of time.

This longer roasting time will also cause the beans to become darker in color, which is why a longer roasted coffee bean is called a darker roast. Keep in mind that it is important to choose premium gourmet coffee blends because many commercial coffee companies under roast their beans to save money.
