How Fresh is Grocery Store Coffee?

Thousands of Americans purchase coffee in the grocery store, but you may want to think twice about your investment in your brew.

First of all, after coffee is roasted, it will sit in a warehouse for two weeks at a time. From that point, it will be loaded onto a truck and moved to different distribution centers where it can sit for up to a week. If the grocery store chain decides that they want the coffee product, then it will be moved to another distribution center until the store is ready for it. After it is finally shelved, it can sit on the shelf for months at a time until it is purchased!

More popular coffee products will be purchased more quickly, but lesser known brands can sit on the shelves of the grocery store for months at a time. The bottom line is that if you want the freshest Java possible, then you need to buy freshly roasted coffee beans that are whole. Look for a company (like mine!) that will ship the coffee beans to you the day that they are roasted for premium freshness in your brew!

Buy Your Coffee Beans Fresh

If you are purchasing pre-ground coffee from a grocery store, then stop! No, I am not a coffee dictator, but I care about your well-being in enjoying a truly delicious cup of Joe. Most commonly purchased whole coffee beans from a grocery store will have been sitting on the shelf for weeks at a time so that they are not fresh in any way.

Furthermore, if you are not purchasing freshly roasted coffee beans, then they will definitely be lacking in their favor. If you purchased pre-ground coffee, then it will be stale because freshly ground coffee goes stale within 30 minutes, so there is no way that the coffee that is pre-ground found at the grocery store can meet these standards.

When you are purchasing fresh, whole coffee beans, it is best to purchase directly from a roaster or online retailer like myself. However, you do need to be careful to look in detail on the website to make sure the beans are freshly roasted the day that they ship to you, otherwise, you will be buying the same quality of coffee beans that you could find sitting on a shelf for months at a time in any grocery store location.

How To Best Enjoy Your Coffee

If you feel like there is anything lacking in your daily cup of Joe, then read on for the best advice that you are ever going to get. I want to share with you a couple of tips to make sure that you are not omitting any of the brightest ideas in keeping your coffee fresh and delicious.

  • First, make sure that you are buying your coffee freshly from a roaster or from a website that will roast it the day it is shipped to you (like me!). This is the only way to get truly fresh coffee, and don't even think about buying pre-ground store-bought coffee. It is way beyond stale.
  • Next, you must grind your coffee beans right before you brew because if you let them sit out for more than two hours, then the grinds will begin to grow stale. Not good.
  • Are you using filtered water in your coffee machine? If the answer is no, then you may be noticing an unpleasant mineral type taste to your coffee due to the tap water content. Not to mention the fact that it will cause lime scale in your coffee maker and shorten its life.
  • Don't let your coffee sit out for more than 30 minutes! This is the window of opportunity you have to best enjoy your Java, so don't miss out.

Has this been helpful? Do you have any coffee tips for me? I would love to hear anything and everything, all for the better good of the brew!

How Do You Get the Freshest Coffee?

I am sure that you too have been completely frustrated by sipping a cup of stale coffee when you expected it to be fresh. I know that we would all prefer to taste the freshest and best coffee brew products, but you do need to be selective in the your coffee drinking to consistently enjoy the best and freshest taste. First, you will want to be purchasing your coffee beans from a roaster and enjoying them within one to two days for the best flavors. I know that I have said this before, but if you are purchasing pre-ground coffee beans, then they are already stale because freshly ground coffee will lose its freshness within two hours of grinding. Also, you may want to consider home roasting methods because you can freshly roast your coffee, grind it, brew it, and enjoy it in one fell swoop. This is the superior option if you have the means to do it, and I know it will make you a believer too!
